Day 3 Game Recaps of the 2023 Palomino World Series
Game Fourteen: Laredo, TX 10, Covina, CA 1
Laredo easily dispatched Covina on Sunday at Uni-Trade Stadium, with a final score of 10-1.
Covina were the first to get on the board in the first when Hurtado singled, scoring a run.
A single by Gabrillo gave Laredo the lead, 2-1, in the top of the second.
A tag up by Sanchez extended the Laredo lead to 3-1 in the top of the third inning.
Ruiz stepped on the mound first for Laredo. The starting pitcher allowed eight hits and one run over six innings, striking out five and walking two. Barcelo started on the mound for Covina. The starting pitcher gave up seven hits and six runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out none and walking four. Soto pitched an inning of no-run ball for Laredo in relief. The reliever gave up zero hits, striking out one and walking none.
Laredo amassed 11 hits in the game. Benavides, Chaires III, and Clements each collected two hits for Laredo. Villaneuva, Clements, and Gabrillo each drove in two runs for Laredo. Laredo were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error.
Hurtado led Covina with two hits in three at bats. Covina turned one double play in the game.
Game Fifteen: Toa Baja, PR 5, New Taipei City, TW 2
Puerto Rico were triumphant over New Taipei City 5-2 on Sunday at Uni-Trade Stadium.
Puerto Rico opened the scoring in the bottom of the first due to three singles. Puerto Rico first got on the board when Vazquez singled, scoring two runs.
Santiago stepped on the hill first for Puerto Rico. The starting pitcher gave up nine hits and two runs over six innings, striking out four and walking three. Chen started on the hill for New Taipei City. They allowed four hits and four runs over two-thirds of an inning, striking out none and walking one.
Vazquez led Puerto Rico with two hits in three at bats. Puerto Rico turned one triple play in the game. Puerto Rico were steady-handed and didn't commit a single error. Vazquez made the most plays with seven.
Chang led New Taipei City with three hits in four at bats. Sung went 1-for-2 at the plate as the first baseman led the team with one run batted in. Liu and Pai each collected multiple hits for New Taipei City. New Taipei City turned one double play in the game. New Taipei City didn't commit a single error in the field.
Game Sixteen: Youngstown, OH 4, Laredo, TX 3
It came down to the wire on Sunday night at Uni-Trade Stadium, as Youngstown grabbed the victory in walk-off fashion, 4-3, over Laredo. Youngstown were down 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Lutte tripled, scoring three runs.
Youngstown were the first to get on the board in the third when Havrilla singled, scoring a run.
In the top of the seventh inning, Laredo went back into the lead after Clements singled, Garza hit into a fielder's choice, and Benavides singled, each scoring a run.
Casteel stepped on the hill first for Youngstown. The pitcher surrendered one hit and zero runs over five and one-third innings, striking out four and walking four. Winans stepped on the bump first for Laredo. The starting pitcher gave up six hits and two runs over six and one-third innings, striking out four and walking three. McGuire appeared in relief for Youngstown.
Lufferty and Henne each collected two hits for Youngstown. Lutte provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Youngstown with three runs batted in. Youngstown turned one double play in the game. Youngstown were steady-handed and didn't commit a single error. Lutte made the most plays with nine.
Benavides led Laredo with two hits in two at bats. Garza, Benavides, and Clements each drove in one run for Laredo. Laredo were sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. DeLeon made the most plays with six.
Game Seventeen: Toa Baja, PR 3, Monterrey, MX 1
Both teams were strong on the hill on Monday, but Puerto Rico defeated Monterrey 3-1. Gonzales started the game for Puerto Rico and recorded 21 outs.
Puerto Rico were the first to get on the board in the first when a passed ball scored one run.
Gonzalez singled on an 0-2 count, which helped Monterrey tie the game in the top of the second at one.
Puerto Rico took the lead in the bottom of the third. Rivera singled, scoring a run, to give Puerto Rico the lead, 2-1.
Gonzales stepped on the hill first for Puerto Rico. They gave up four hits and one run over seven innings, striking out four and walking none. Zenni began the game for Monterrey. The starting pitcher allowed two hits and one run over one inning, striking out none and walking none.
Gonzales, Rivera, and Cortez each collected two hits for Puerto Rico. Vargas and Rivera each drove in one run for Puerto Rico.
Number eight hitter, Gonzalez, showed the depth of Monterrey's lineup, by leading them with two hits in three at bats. Monterrey turned two double plays in the game. Monterrey didn't commit a single error in the field.
