PONY Alum, Koenig, Makes Big League Debut

Jared Koenig, a PONY Alumni from Aptos, California, was called up to make his big league debut for the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday.

Initially drafted in the 35th round of the 2014 draft by the Chicago White Sox, Koenig decided to return to college and eventually went on to play in independent leagues for four years. It wasn't until Koenig was with the Auckland Tuatara of the Australian Baseball League that the Oakland Athletics decided to sign him to a minor league deal.

While in the minor leagues for the past two seasons, Koenig compiled an 11-7 record with a 2.94 ERA. His stellar performance on the mound caused the 28 year old to be called up just 13 months after making his minor league debut.

In his June 8th major league debut against the Atlanta Braves, Koenig struck out three in four innings of work. He allowed four earned runs on five hits in a 13-2 Oakland A's loss. While he ultimately earned the loss, Koenig showed promise in his debut on the bump against the 2021 World Series Champions Braves, who are one of the hottest teams in baseball right now, compiling a seven game win streak.

Koenig's unorthodox path to the majors started with a typical route of playing PONY Baseball in northern California. He started his career playing for the Santa Cruz Mid-County PONY League right near his hometown of Aptos, California, playing in both the Colt and Palomino divisions. Koenig is the first Aptos-born player since Carlos Torres, a pitcher who is also a PONY alumni, to make his major league debut.

Jared Koenig is set to toe the rubber again June 14th as the A's travel to Fenway to take on the Boston Red Sox at 7:10pm.
