PONY Director/ Alumni Tyler Vargas and PONY Alumni Lieutenant Karl Sapper

A summer PONY Director for the last 4 years, Tyler Vargas is kicking on Saturdays in his senior year at ENMU but he may very well be kicking on Sundays in the NFL very soon.

Vargas’ domination as a kicker and punter throughout his college career has garnered him a spot in the D2 Senior Bowl as well as the prestigious Dream Bowl. Both will be crawling with NFL scouts looking for the next Sunday clutch kicker.

The night this photo was taken, Tyler called up his old friend, Karl Sapper who he’d known since their PONY baseball days in Ramona, CA. The boys not only played baseball together but also played on the Division Championship football teams at Ramona High School. Karl is stationed in the Air Force at the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJPPT) program at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. The Greyhounds were in town to take on the Midwestern State Mustangs in a D2 division match up.

Karl and his flyboy buddies were treated to a back and forth battle that showcased Vargas’ talents as Tyler kicked a 47 yard field goal, hit all of his PATs (Point After Touchdown), had a 43 yard punt average, booting a 53 yarder, and kicked the game winning field goal in the final 3 minutes of the game.

While Tyler is pursuing his kicking dreams, Karl pursued his desire to serve and fly fighter jets by attending and graduating from the US Air Force Academy in 2018, with a degree in Engineering Systems with an emphasis in Mechanical Engineering. He then went on to ENJJPT, an elite flight-training program where pilots from NATO nations train together to better their abilities in protecting NATO’s interests worldwide.

Both boys and their families continue a tradition of gathering for Thanksgiving back in Ramona each year. Soon they may be watching from NFL seats cheering on their favorite kicker and PONY Baseball Director.
